Intermediate level art curriculum

1 hour class for 32 weeks

Week 1: "Drawing & ability assessment. Drawing pencils"
Children 7 years and up, with previous drawing studies at intermediate level. "Draw still life object." Using drawing pencils; B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B and H, learn how to make fine line and cross-thatching techniques, and shadow and tone techniques. Intermediate level students will freehand draw a shadowed circle, a three dimensional box with shadow, an intermediate level flower and glass bottle.

 

Week 2: "Drawing with ink pens"
"Drawing pens." Using ink, you will learn how to make fine line and cross-thatching, shadow and tone techniques. Comparing the difference with your drawing pencil exercise from the first week. You will use ink to freehand draw a shadowed a circle, a three dimensional box, an intermediate level flower and glass bottle.

 

Week 3: "Charcoal"
Charcoal comes in varying thickness, of which, our students will use two for charcoal studies. Charcoal is brittle and breaks easily, so you they learn how to use a light touch. Learn how to create shadow and tone. Students will use charcoal to create a still life (intermediate level) drawing of a vase with flowers, or glass bottles.

 

Week 4: "Dark ink wash study"
Learn how to use dark ink brush and wash. This form of drawing uses a brush instead of a pencil and is a very useful technique. This will assist students when they move on to learning about watercolors. Using two watercolor brushes and a dark watercolor, students will learn techniques to create tones and shadow on a circle and three dimensional box, an intermediate level flower and glass bottle.

 

Week 5: "Still life study/bowl of fruit with pencils and ink pen"
The last 4 weeks have provided students with learning how to use various drawing materials. Now our intermediate students will start working on creating a still life drawing. Using drawing pencils and ink pens, students will learn how to draw a bowl of fruit. We will first draw the still life subject, then gradually add shadow, add darker tones and grading to finish.

 

Week 6: "Still life study/bowl of fruit with charcoal and watercolor wash"
Last week, our student used pencils and pens to create a still life drawing. This week they will use charcoal and ink wash to draw the same still life study of a bowl of fruit. Students will use charcoal and ink wash to gradually add shadow, darker tones and grading to finish.

 

Week 7: "Line drawing and everyday subjects"
Our intermediate students will learn about basic line drawing of everyday subjects. Students will use drawing pencils to freehand draw a cylinder and a cone in two positions. A drinking glass and glass bottles.

 

Week 8: "Continue line drawing study"
We will continue our line drawing studies. Using pencils, pens and charcoal, students will freehand draw a jug and a teacup on a saucer.

 

Week 9: "Trees and flowers study/pencil & ink tutorial"
We will study trees and floral shapes. Using pencils and pens, freehand draw intermediate level trees and flowers.

 

Week 10: "Continue tree and flower study/charcoal & watercolor/ink wash tutorial"
We will continue our study of trees and flowers using charcoal sticks and watercolor/ink wash. Students will freehand draw intermediate level trees and flowers.

 

Week 11: "One-point perspective drawing"
Students will learn about basic one-point perspective drawing. Students will use pencils and a ruler to draw a living room/one-point perspective tutorial.

 

Week 12: "Two-point perspective drawing"
Students will learn about two-point perspective drawing. Students will use pencils and a ruler to draw a street corner.

 

Week 13: "Applying perspective drawing to landscape drawing."
Now that students have learned about one-point and two-point perspectives, they will learn how to apply perspective when drawing landscapes. Students will draw a intermediate level landscape.

 

Week 14: "Moving and reflective water study."
How to draw water. We will learn about drawing moving water and reflective water. Using pencils, pens or charcoal, students will freehand draw water tutorials.

 

Week 15: "Drawing basic proportions of the human head/front view"
Students will learn how to draw a front view of the human head. Using pencils, students will learn how to freehand draw the front view of the human head.

 

Week 16: "Continue proportions of the head studies/profile view"
Students will learn how to draw a profile view of the human head. Using pencils, students will learn how to freehand draw a profile view of a human head.

 

Week 17: "Continue proportions of the head studies/emotions"
Students will learn how to draw emotions. Using pencils, students will learn how to draw various human emotions.

 

Week 18: "The standing figure & moving figure."
Students will learn how to draw the standing and moving human figure. Using pencils, learn how to draw a standing and moving human figure.

 

Week 19: "Watercolor studies/fruit bowl"
Now that we have learned basic drawing, we will move on to other art mediums. The first we will explore is watercolors. Our intermediate students will use watercolors to paint an intermediate level bowl of fruit still life study.

 

Week 20: "Continue watercolor studies/floral vase"
Students will continue their watercolors study by learning how to paint an intermediate level floral vase.

 

Week 21: "Continue watercolor studies/birdhouse"
Students will continue their watercolors study by learning how to paint an intermediate level birdhouse.

 

Week 22: "Continue watercolor studies/water & trees"
Level 1: Students will continue their watercolors study by learning how to paint an intermediate level water and trees landscape.

 

Week 23: "Pastels studies/bowl of fruit"
Students will start their pastels studies. The first week of pastels, students will learn how to paint an intermediate level bowl of fruit.

 

Week 24: "Continue pastel studies/floral vase"
Students will continue their pastels studies by learning how to paint an intermediate level floral vase.

 

Week 25: "Continue pastel studies/birdhouse"
Students will continue their pastels studies by learning how to paint an intermediate level birdhouse.

 

Week 26: "Continue pastel studies/water and trees"
Students will continue their pastels studies by learning how to paint an intermediate level water and tree landscape.

 

Week 27: "Acrylics paint study/bowl of fruit."
Students will start their acrylics studies. The first week of acrylics, students will learn how to paint an intermediate level bowl of fruit.

 

Week 28: "Continue acrylics studies/floral vase"
Students will continue their acrylics studies by learning how to paint an intermediate level floral vase study.

 

Week 29: "Continue acrylics studies/landscape of water & trees."
Students will continue their acrylics studies by learning how to paint an intermediate level water and trees landscape.

 

Week 30: "Basic sculpting"
Intermediate sculpting tutorial.

 

Week 31: "Continue sculpting studies with level 1 & 2 students"

 

Week 32: "Continue sculpting studies with level 1 & 2 students"
