Beginners level art curriculum

1 hour class for 32 weeks

Week 1: "Drawing & ability assessment. Drawing pencils"
Children 5 years & up, with no previous art training. "Beginners drawing using pencils and pens." The most common medium for beginners drawing is pencil. You will learn how to use B-grade pencils as they make a darker mark with less pressure required than the harder H pencils. You will learn how to use the various grades of drawing pencils like; B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B and H. Use these pencils to create tone, grading lines, and shadow techniques. Trace, draw, and shadow a circle, a three dimensional box, and a beginner level flower.

 

Week 2: "Drawing with ink pens"
"Introduction to drawing pens." In our second beginners drawing class, we will learn how to use ink pens using same techniques you learned in the first glass with your pencils. You will see how different the pencils and pens look. Trace, draw and shadow a circle, a three dimensional box, and beginner level flower.

 

Week 3: "Charcoal"
Charcoal comes in varying thickness, of which, for beginners, we will only use two. It is brittle and breaks easily, so students will learn how to use a light touch. You will learn drawing and smudging techniques to create tones and texture. Trace, draw and shadow a circle, a three-dimensional box and a beginner level flower.

 

Week 4: "Dark ink wash study"
Learn how to use dark ink brush and wash. This form of drawing uses a brush instead of a pencil and is a very useful technique. This will assist your ability to move on to watercolors. Using two watercolor brushes and dark watercolor, students will learn techniques to create tones and shadow on a circle and three dimensional box and a beginner level flower.

 

Week 5: "Still life study/bowl of fruit with pencils and ink pen"
Now that we have learned how to use various drawing materials, our beginners will work on creating a still life drawing of a bowl of fruit. Using pencils and pens, you will trace and draw a beginner level bowl of fruit.

 

Week 6: "Still life study/bowl of fruit with charcoal and watercolor wash"
You have learned how to use pencils and pens to draw a still life study of a bowl of fruit. Trace and draw a beginner level bowl of fruit using your charcoal sticks and watercolor wash.

 

Week 7: "Line drawing and everyday subjects"
Our beginners will learn about basic line drawing of everyday subjects. Today we will use our drawing pencils to trace and draw a cube, a cylinder and a cone in two positions. Then we will trace and draw a drinking glass, and a bottle.

 

Week 8: "Continue line drawing study"
We will continue our line drawing studies. Using pencils, pens and charcoal, trace and draw a jug and a teacup on a saucer.

 

Week 9: "Trees and flowers study/pencil & ink tutorial"
We will study trees and floral shapes. Using pencils and pens our beginners will trace and draw basic, beginner level trees and flower shapes.

 

Week 10: "Continue tree and flower study/charcoal & watercolor/ink wash tutorial"
We will continue our study of trees and flowers using charcoal sticks and watercolor/ink wash, trace and draw basic beginner level trees and flower shapes.

 

Week 11: "One-point perspective drawing"
Learn about basic one-point perspective drawing. Our beginners will use pencils and rulers to trace and draw a beginner level living room/one-point perspective tutorial.

 

Week 12: "Two-point perspective drawing"
Students will learn about two-point perspective drawing. Our beginners will use pencils and rulers to trace and draw a beginner level tutorial of a typical street corner.

 

Week 13: "Applying perspective drawing to landscape drawing."
Now that we have learned about one-point and two-point perspectives, they will learn how to apply perspective when drawing landscapes. Students will trace and draw a basic beginner level landscape.

 

Week 14: "Moving and reflective water study."
How to draw water. We will learn about drawing moving water and reflective water. Using pencils, students will trace and draw a beginner level tutorial of moving and reflective water.

 

Week 15: "Drawing basic proportions of the human head/front view"
Students will learn how to draw a basic front view of the human head. Using pencils, students will trace and draw a beginner level tutorial of the front view of the human head.

 

Week 16: "Continue proportions of the head studies/profile view"
Students will learn how to draw a profile view of the human head. Using pencils, students will trace and draw a beginner level profile view of the human head.

 

Week 17: "Continue proportions of the head studies/emotions"
Students will learn how to draw emotions. Using pencils, students will trace and draw a beginner level tutorial of human emotions.

 

Week 18: "The standing figure & moving figure."
Students will learn how to draw the standing and moving human figure. Using pencils, students will trace and draw a beginner level standing and moving human figure tutorial.

 

Week 19: "Watercolor studies/fruit bowl"
Now that we have learned basic drawing, we will move on to other art mediums. The first we will explore is watercolors. Our beginners will be introduced to using various watercolor materials and practicing painting techniques. Students will trace and paint, or freehand paint, a beginner level bowl of fruit study.

 

Week 20: "Continue watercolor studies/floral vase"
Students will continue their watercolors study to trace and paint, or freehand paint, a beginner level floral vase tutorial.

 

Week 21: "Continue watercolor studies/birdhouse"
Students will continue their watercolors studies to trace and paint, or freehand paint, a beginner level birdhouse tutorial.

 

Week 22: "Continue watercolor studies/water & trees"
Students will continue their watercolors studies to trace and paint, or freehand paint, a beginners level water and trees landscape tutorial.

 

Week 23: "Pastels studies/bowl of fruit"
Students will start their pastels studies. Our first pastels class will focus on practicing various blending and texture techniques. Students will use pastels to make a beginner level bowl of fruit study.

 

Week 24: "Continue pastel studies/floral vase"
Using pastels, students will trace and paint, or freehand paint, a beginner floral vase tutorial.

 

Week 25: "Continue pastel studies/birdhouse"
Using pastels, students will trace and paint, or freehand paint, a beginner level birdhouse tutorial.

 

Week 26: "Continue pastel studies/water and trees"
Using pastels, students will trace and paint, or freehand paint, a beginner level water and trees landscape.

 

Week 27: "Acrylics paint study/bowl of fruit."
Students will start their acrylics studies. Our first acrylics class will work on painting techniques and students will paint a beginners level bowl of fruit still life study.

 

Week 28: "Continue acrylics studies/floral vase"
Students will use acrylics to paint a beginner level floral vase study.

 

Week 29: "Continue acrylics studies/landscape of water & trees."
Students will use acrylics to paint a beginner level water and trees landscape.

 

Week 30: "Basic sculpting"
Beginners sculpting class. Includes learning about sculpting materials, sculpting techniques and practice.

 

Week 31: "Continue sculpting studies with level 1 & 2 students"

 

Week 32: "Continue sculpting studies with level 1 & 2 students"
